The Fake-Shop Detector is the result of ongoing research projects. Since 2018, experts in artificial intelligence, digital services and internet fraud, including AIT, ÖIAT and X-Net, have been cooperating to detect fake shops.

Initial Situation

The requirement

It is becoming increasingly common for purchases to be made online. However, it should be noted that not all online shops are reputable. The term 'fake shops' refers to fraudulent online retailers that are often difficult to identify at first glance. While they may initially appear to be a professional outfit, it is not uncommon for them to deliver substandard or no goods at all. The team behind Fake-Shop Detector is committed to making online shopping safer.

Our Solution

The Fake-Shop Detector verifies online shops in two steps. Firstly, it searches a database of reputable and fraudulent online shops, which is curated by experts. In the event of an online shop being unknown, the second step is a real-time analysis using artificial intelligence (AI). During the automatic analysis of websites, particular attention is paid to the quality and traceability of the AI. It is not possible for it to learn in an unsupervised manner; however, it is subject to constant review and quality control by the experts at Watchlist Internet. The tool's unique selling point is that it uses a browser plugin to warn online shoppers about fake shops in real time. Data protection and privacy are of the utmost importance.
